Today’s Agenda
The Need to Be Understood
Good Morning!
Happy Wednesday! This is the 100th edition of Thought Breakfast!! Thank you all so much for reading. I firmly believe that starting the day with some thoughtfulness and a touch of philosophical inquiry creates a ripple effect that can make the world a better place. I’ve enjoyed writing for you all more than I can express. So follow our socials, spread the word, and keep thinking.
“I think, therefore I am,” Descartes says. “I talk nonsense, therefore I’m human,” said Dostoyevsky. Stay silly and goofy, stay curious, and keep the childlike wonder that inspired you to subscribe to this newsletter. Onto the next 100!!
Today, we’re going to talk about the need to be understood with our favorite, Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Following that up, we’re going to do the Clarity Check. Wrapping it together, we’ll take a quote from Notes from Underground.
Strap in. Thought Breakfast is served!

The Desire to Be Seen
Humans have a deep need to be understood. Not just heard, but recognized. We want others to understand our intentions, interpret us correctly, and see us as we see ourselves. Relationships are shaped by this desire for recognition.
But no one has direct access to your inner world except you. Others can only see your behavior, tone, and fragments of your personal values. We assume understanding happens automatically, but it doesn’t. Misunderstanding is actually the default, not the exception.
We expect people to “just get it.” When they don’t, frustration wells up inside us. Instead of clarifying, we withdraw, overthink, and resent people. This is the case with Dostoyevsky’s Underground Man.
The Underground Man wants to be understood, but he entirely avoids clear expression. He hides behind irony, contradicts himself constantly, and distances himself socially (way more than 6 feet). He’s the perfect example of how isolation doesn’t come from others, but from withholding ourselves.
Being understood requires expression, and expression requires vulnerability. Instead of assuming understanding, say it clearly and directly. Risk being misunderstood. Clarity reduces resentment and leads to healthier relationships and a healthier life.

The Clarity Check
Ask yourself:
Where am I expecting understanding without expressing myself clearly?
What have I left unsaid that I expect someone to know?
What would it look like to say it directly?

“There are things, gentlemen, which a man is afraid to tell even to himself, and every decent man has a number of such things stored away in his mind.” — Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Notes from Underground
Dostoyevsky points out that we hide parts of ourselves even from ourselves. If we can’t face those truths internally, we certainly can’t express them to others. The desire to be understood clashes with the fear of being fully known. Misunderstanding, confrontation, and tension in our relationships often begin not with the other, but with what we choose to conceal.
Munch on that for today. Thank you all for reading, from the bottom of my heart. Have a great day, and come back tomorrow for another steaming hot plate of Thought Breakfast!
