The Courage to Continue

Good Morning!

Happy Friday, everyone! The boulder is at the top of the hill, and now we can rest. Hold the thought about the boulder, because that’s what we’re getting back into.

Today we’re going to wrap up the week on the burden of being human with Camus's triumphant message of pushing forward. Burning that off, we're going to do a related thought exercise. Wrapping it all up, we're going to look at a small quote from Camus’ The Rebel.

Let’s keep it short and get Friday going. Thought Breakfast is served!

Today’s Breakfast

Quiet Defiance

Albert Camus, an absurdist, doesn't solve the absurd. Instead, he teaches us how to live inside it. The world never guarantees meaning, fairness, or final clarity. Camus asks the question: What if nothing gets resolved, and we live anyway?

The absurd can be understood as the clash between our need for meaning and the world's silence. The courage to push (Sisyphus) isn't dramatic rebellion, but a continued participation in life.

Camus rejects things like despair, false hope, or escaping into some illusion. For Camus, meaning shows up as persistence. Things like showing up, choosing again, and acting without guarantees.

It’s a simple point, but if Camus were asked about the “burden of being human,” he'd say that persisting through that burden is what gives meaning, even if the meaning is simply the struggle itself.

The Continuation Check

Ask yourself:

  • Where in your life are you waiting for closure before moving forward?

  • What would it look like to continue, even without resolution?

  • What small act today says: I'm still here?

“I rebel—therefore we exist.” - Albert Camus, The Rebel

Camus’s rebel never “wins.” He simply continues.

Meaning, then, isn't something we discover at the end of the struggle. It appears in the act of refusing to withdraw from life.

Just like Sisyphus’ boulder, the burden of being human is reconciled in the action.

Munch on that for today. I kept it short and sweet so we have more room for reflection not just on today's edition, but the entire week. Have a great weekend, and come back on Monday for another steaming hot plate of Thought Breakfast!
